Sick Just Got Real

Between over-packed schedules and playdates, sticky messes and scraped knees, late nights and early morning wakeup calls, you’ve been through it all. Somedays it may seem the minute you even start thinking about a little “me” time, disaster strikes, and that’s only when everyone in the household is healthy! Add a sick little one to the mix and nothing else seems to matter.

My son never got sick as an infant or toddler, but it was a different story once he first started school. It was then nearly impossible to keep us all healthy since he seemingly picked up every germ possible. This always resulted in a domino-effect in the household.

My family and I’ve now lost count of times we’ve visited the doctor since we’ve been susceptible to various maladies, from the cold and flu to strep and sinusitis. It’s usually worse during the cooler seasons, but the cold and flu are known to run amok in my household during the warmer seasons! Even though my family and I’ve been sick countless of times over the years, sick got real when my daughter came down with an upper respiratory infection when she was just a few months old. This required nebulized therapy to help reduce the upper respiratory infection. I felt so scared and helpless, especially since this was my first time ever experience something this serious with one of my children!

  • My Get real moment is when our whole family was sick at the same time. Over the holidays a few years ago, we had gotten the flu at the same time. Husband, two sons and I, were all sick. Not the best of memories, but we all laugh about it today.

  • I had both my son and daughter sick at the same time, and it was really hard. I do not know what I would have done if it was not for my husband helping me. Then I got sick and he had to take care of me and the kids! What a nice husband!!

  • Having sick kids can be difficult at times. it’s extremely difficult when the kids and yourself get sick at the same time, especially when you are a single parent.

  • My sick got real moment happened about 5-6 months ago, my son has never really been too sick in his 8 years of life, he has a pretty strong immune system but he did catch that nasty stomach flu bug and it was an all night battle where my husband and I both took turns running him to the bathroom to clean up his projectile vomit and hold his head while the other stripped the bed and put fresh sheets. It was horrible and just as he was starting to feel better my husband and I both got just as sick as he was at the same time…yuck!

  • Many years ago when my daughters were really young, we all got sick around Christmas time with the flu. It was awful! Both of my daughters ended up in bed with me so that I could help them when they would throw up, as well as, help myself, too! I remember feeling so rotten but worrying more about my daughters and wishing they would feel better much sooner than myself.

  • My sick just go real moments were challenging. I just tried to keep my kids as comfortable as possible and give lots of live and affection. Luckily, I have a great husband to give me the breaks I needed so I could keep all in the house, happy.

  • I’m a mom of 4 and a grandma to 5. I am also a nurse by profession. Taking care of sick people comes naturally to me. The hardest part of caring for others is when I am sick myself. Taking care of ill children was easy unless I was sick or sicker than them.

  • My get real moment was when my nephew got super sick in my brand new car. Not fun or cool.

  • I used to take care of my niece every weekend in a tiny attic apartment. One time she got sick and threw up all weekend. It was hard to take care of her and the mess it made as it made me want to throw up!

  • It’s hard at night when your kids can’t sleep. It helps when your partner help you get the kids back to sleep.

  • My daughter got really sick on a plane and it was very interesting fitting her and I into a small plane bathroom so she could vomit.

  • One of my mommy moments is when I picked my daughter up from school sick and she puked all over me and the car. What a mess.

  • My sick got real moment happened last year when I was taking my daughter to the Dr and she threw up in the car. Yucky, I almost got sick because I had to wait until we got home to clean it up
