Art journaling offers a way for us to creatively interact with the Word of God. You can reflect on the beauty of God’s word and take notes as you thumb within the thick pages of the ESV Illuminated Bible: Art Journaling Edition. It features full ESV text alongside over 500 elegantly hand-lettered gold ink illustrations by renowned artist Dana Tanamachi.
The practice of illumination (or adding decoration to manuscripts) dates back to the early fifth century and continued into the Middle Ages. This is when scribes, monks, and other artists used richly colored pigments. This included gold and silver leaf to add decoration, initials, and illustration to the pages of books and Bibles. Because the Scriptures were not available in vernacular languages, they were not accessible to many, even those in the upper class. By illuminating the text, artists beautified the pages of the Bible as a way to summarize, explain, and, ultimately, preserve its message.
Read, Meditate, and Create with the ESV Illuminated Bible
This version of the Bible was created to continue in the historic tradition of illuminated manuscripts. The ornamentation and illustrations will captivate the recipient’s attention while stirring up affection for the Creator and inviting deep reflection on the narrative and truths of Scripture. It is almost too beautiful to write in, but the ESV Illuminated Bible: Art Journaling Edition includes a single-column text setting and extra wide margins provide an ample amount of space for your own artistic expressions, notes, prayers, and journaling.
