My penchant for traveling stemmed from my childhood. I can fondly recall traveling a lot as a child since my family and I visited city after city and state after state. Those are memories that I’ll hold dear for a lifetime! Those travels are what fostered my love for traveling and history. That is why I have always wanted to instill the love of traveling with my own children. It seems like my son has already been bitten by the traveling bug! As the school year draws to a close end for him, he has recently started brainstorming about what destination that we can embark on for our next adventure.
One destination that would be perfect for a family vacation would be Gulf County, Florida. Their Gulf County Adventure Guide highlights a bevy of relaxing, yet fun-filled outdoor adventures that my family and I would enjoy! Some of those adventures include kayaking through the Dead Lakes, biking on Loggerhead Run, horseback riding on the beach, and paddling through the picturesque Apalachicola Bayside. That is just a small sampling of what can be experienced in Gulf County, Florida!
Camping at Money Bayou
Money Bayou is located on the Forgotten Coast of Florida, but it is anything but forgettable! It is known for its quiet nature (the ideal spot for camping!), yet has a colorful past. Legend has it that pirates visited it between the 1700s – 1800s, and perhaps hid some of their treasure in the bayou. It’s said that the treasure chest is unattainable and that it sinks deeper and deeper into the sand each time someone digs for it. Whether that’s a fact or fiction concocted by a wild imagination, you’ll never know unless you visit!
Dead Lakes in Wewa
Dead Lakes of Wewahitchka, also known as Wewa to the locals, is known for its hauntingly beautiful scenery and serene atmosphere. It sounds like the perfect place to relax and unwind!
Biking
There is hardly anything more relaxing and peaceful than a quiet bike ride on a sunny afternoon! Gulf County has a few trails and bike paths that are wonderful for those moments, including Loggerhead Run Bike Path, BeachWalk, Port City Trail, and BayWalk Trail.
Turtles
Turtles, turtles, turtles. They’re everywhere! Much as my son loves turtles, I know that he’d have a field day spotting out for them.
