If you are experiencing “pink in the sink” when you spit out your toothpaste, or blood on your dental floss, take heed. People mistakenly think this is a sign that they are brushing hard/well or flossing efficiently, but bleeding gums is actually a symptom of gingivitis, and it is a warning sign that your gums need serious attention. Other symptoms include gums that are tender or painful to touch, receding gums, persistent bad breath, swollen gums, and gums that are bright red or purple. It can easily be prevented with daily brushing, flossing and anti-gingivitis mouthwash. You can also minimize your risk by cutting back on soda, switching to diet or sugar-free soda when you do drink it. However, diet sodas still contain acids that can erode your tooth enamel, risking cavities and plaque buildup that eventually lead up to gum disease. Personally, I like to avoid it much as I can, drinking Sprite every once in awhile.
Dentists estimate that 80% of us develop gum disease in our lifetimes, ranging from mild gingivitis to severe periodontitis. If left untreated, however, gum disease may progress to other oral health issues, including tooth loss (it’s the #1 reason for adult tooth loss!). Other studies and experts, including Dr. Oz, have also linked gum disease to heart disease, stroke, breast cancer and respiratory diseases, such as COPD.
I was recently introduced to The Natural Dentist Healthy Gums Anti-Gingivitis Rinse ($7.49), a mouthwash that has been clinically proven to protect against gingivitis, dramatically reduce and prevent bleeding gums, reduce plaque, kill germs, and freshen breath. The main ingredient is Aloe Vera, which is known to help prevent bleeding gums. It also contains other natural medicinal components such as Echinacea, goldenseal, calendula, and grapefruit seed extract that help calm gum inflammation.
The flavor that I received (Peppermint Twist) is very pleasant, and I’m usually not a big fan of peppermint. I love that it doesn’t contain alcohol or artificial like most mouthwashes do, because I usually found them to be too harsh. They can also lead to more serious oral health issues down the road. Therefore, I’d recommend this brand to anyone who is experiencing bleeding gums and/or looking for a natural, healthier alternative to add to their oral hygiene regimen.
