There’s no sugarcoating it. 2020 was a tumultuous year! After the chaotic whirlwind of 2020, self-care is more crucial than ever. Taking care of our skin falls under that umbrella! Not only stress and anxiety are not good for the skin, but our skin is affected every day by toxins and oxidizers: makeup, pollution in the air, exposure to the sun and wind, and bacteria lurking within our pores.

If there’s anything I have learned in life, it’s always to try to be flexible as much as possible and never get too comfortable. This sentiment goes for skincare as well. Many of us adhere to a skincare regimen and use the same products over and over again without wanting to try something new. This sometimes can lead to results that are lackluster. Today, I’m sharing tried-and-true methods that will help jumpstart your skincare routine for 2021 and beyond.

Skin Care Changes to Make in 2021

Feeling beautiful gives me unwavering confidence that makes me feel like I can take on the world. That is why taking care of my skin is important since it helps me feel confident about my age as well as my appearance. I don’t have any qualms about my age, but I do want to age gracefully since Father Time is slowly, silently, and steadily ticking away. I strive to take care of my skin by wearing sunscreen, using quality skincare, and limiting my usage of makeup since it can be taxing on the skin.

→ Give the Skin a Boost with Hyaluronic Acid

2020 was all about Hyaluronic Acid and this year isn’t going to be any different! Hyaluronic Acid can help turn back the clock, repairing skin damage and preventing future skin issues. Naturally found in the body, it attracts moisture like a magnet and has the ability to retain 1,000 times its weight in water. It has a wealth of benefits for the skin when used in skincare or as a supplement. Using products that contain this ingredient can give you plumper, well-hydrated skin – perfect for those that have dry skin!

→ Exfoliate

One of my tried and true favorite ways to obtain and maintain smooth skin is exfoliating. I have noticed that my skin is at its best when I exfoliate once a week in the warmer seasons and twice a week in the cooler seasons.

→ Microneedling

Microneedling was first introduced in 1995 by Dr. Desmond Fernandes in Philadelphia to help induce collagen production. Today, it can cost anywhere from $200 – $700 per session. The price is based on the extent of the treatment. Although the number of sessions can vary, three to six sessions are needed for the best results. With this in mind, you’ll end up spending anywhere from $600 to $4,200 altogether. While there’s a notable difference between professional and at-home microneedling treatments, the latter is still a wonderful way to promote healthier-looking skin. It also helps skincare products absorb better! The difference is that at-home derma rollers don’t penetrate the skin as deeply as those that the professionals use.

If you’re wanting to give at-home derma rolling a try, derma rollers are a dime dozen and inexpensive! I have a derma roller that gently pierces the skin to activate collagen production, thanks to the 0.3-millimeter stainless steel needles. Key benefits include a less noticeable appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, and uneven skin tone. Skin also seems to be more radiant, smoother, and firmer. When pairing a derma roller with your favorite serum, you’ll achieve optimum results as it really gets the serum deep in there. This is an easy way to make a long-term difference in your skin. It’s not painful at all either!

→ Get Rest

Beauty sleep isn’t a myth! Getting enough sleep not only helps us feel rejuvenated when we wake up, but it’s important when cellular turnover is at its height. Getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep can make a world of a difference for our skin, especially as we approach age 30 and collagen production starts decreasing. Sleep deprivation can help speed up aging!

→ Boost Collagen Production

There are plenty of ways to help boost collagen production. One of my tried-and-true methods is using quality collagen supplements like Dr. Emil’s Multi Collagen Plus. In fast-absorbing capsules, 5 types of premium collagen peptides work harmoniously together at the cellular level to help support the skin. Collagen isn’t just beneficial for beautiful skin, but it also plays a major role in bone health and tissue repair as well as digestion, hair, and nails.

Each product of theirs is full of potential. Their products are also 100% free of hormones, hype, dairy, gluten, GMOs, gimmicks, and empty promises.

Some other surefire ways to help offset the signs of aging are working out regularly or at least staying active, even it’s just going for long, brisk walks; drinking water, and avoiding unhealthy beverages and food much as you can since they’re taxing on the skin. These things have been advised over and over again for years, but each thing adds up. It’s never too early to hydrate, maintain, and coddle the skin!
