Modern Day Princesses vs. Traditional Princesses

Share this post:

Modern day princesses, such as Kiara and Merida, inspire young girls to be less subservient than our unrealistic, traditional favorites (i.e. Cinderella, Snow White, and Aurora) and to be stronger and independent. The traditional princesses’ skills were limited in areas, such as singing or cleaning. They weren’t particularly very intelligent, because a woman’s intelligence wasn’t considered as a notable virtue during former centuries.

Aurora and Snow White weren’t known for any kind of rebellious behavior at any extent, because this is something that good girls didn’t do. The only thing that Cinderella did that was slightly rebellious was sneaking out to go a ball, in hopes of a brush with Prince Charming. Much as I loved Cinderella as a child (and still do), she didn’t have any kind of backbone when it came to confronting her emotionally pernicious step-mother and step-sisters. Her rags-to-riches story still draws me in, nonetheless. I like that she came from nothing and rose above them all in the end.
