When my husband and I received an invitation to stay at The Galt House Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to experience one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Nestled along the Ohio River, this historic hotel offered us a luxurious retreat, complete with a one-bedroom suite featuring a deluxe waterview front. From the moment we arrived, we were immersed in elegance, history, and Southern hospitality. Here’s a glimpse into our unforgettable experience.

A Storied History: The Galt House Hotel’s Legacy

Before diving into our stay, it’s worth sharing the fascinating history of The Galt House Hotel. Dating back to 1865, the original hotel tragically burned down, but a second iteration was built in 1869. Designed by architect Henry Whitestone, this second hotel became a symbol of Louisville’s grandeur. However, by 1919, it closed its doors and was demolished in 1921.

The modern Galt House Hotel we know today was born in the 1970s, thanks to local developer Al J. Schneider. His vision to revitalize Louisville’s waterfront led to the opening of the first tower in 1972, followed by the East Tower in 1984. The hotel’s distinctive two-tower design and luxurious suites quickly made it a premier destination.

In 2004, the hotel added the stunning 3rd Floor Conservatory, a steel and glass enclosed space inspired by London’s Crystal Palace. This area houses the Conservatory Bar and Thelma’s Deli, paying tribute to the hotel’s founders and naturalist John James Audubon. A massive $80 million renovation in 2018 further elevated the hotel, making it a modern yet timeless gem in Louisville.

Our Suite: A Waterfront Haven

Our one-bedroom suite was nothing short of spectacular. The deluxe waterview front offered breathtaking panoramas of the Ohio River, with the city’s skyline reflecting beautifully in the water. The spacious living area was elegantly appointed, featuring plush seating and modern amenities.

The suite’s layout was thoughtfully designed, offering both comfort and functionality. The living area was perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring, while the bedroom provided a peaceful retreat. The large windows framed the water and cityscape, creating a picturesque scene that was a joy to wake up to each morning.

The bathroom was equally impressive, with a sleek design, a spacious shower, and luxurious fixtures. The shower, as seen in the photos, was large and glass-enclosed. The dual sinks, topped with a generous countertop, provided ample space for toiletries, and the presence of plush towels and high-quality toiletries added to the sense of indulgence.

The bedroom was a sanctuary of comfort, with a king-sized bed dressed in luxurious linens. They treated us with charcuterie board, artfully arranged with an array of cured meats, cheeses, and accompaniments.

The highlight of the suite was undoubtedly the private balcony, where we enjoyed morning coffee and evening sunsets. Watching the riverboats glide by while sipping a glass of Kendall-Jackson’s “Kentucky Derby” 2023 Chardonnay was pure bliss.

Dining at Swizzle: A Culinary Delight

A few hours after checking in, we had a reservation at Swizzle, the hotel’s renowned restaurant. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with a perfect blend of modern decor and Southern charm. Swizzle Dinner & Drinks is a modern diner’s take on a classic dinner club.

With the greatest river and city views in Louisville, Swizzle offers prime steaks, sustainable seafood, local produce, and mouthwatering drinks, transporting guests back to a time when they could enjoy a delicious meal, excellent cocktails, and good company whenever they wished. Swizzle features a large bar, an open-concept kitchen, and two revolving floors.

I opted for the Roasted Lobster Tail with Old Bay, Drawn Butter, and Lemon. The dish was exquisite! I enjoyed their succulent lobster, pairing with wild mushrooms that added an earthy depth of flavor. My husband enjoyed his own selection, but I must say, the lobster was truly exceptional. The restaurant’s service was attentive without being intrusive, allowing us to savor each bite and enjoy the evening fully.

To complement our meal, I indulged in a Tom Collins cocktail, a refreshing blend of gin, lemon juice, sugar, and soda water. It was the perfect refreshment between bites.
