Most water bottles are made of the oil-derived polyethylene terephthalate, which is also known as PET. PET may be less toxic than many plastics. However, the Berkeley Ecology Center found that manufacturing PET generates more than 100 times the toxic emissions — in the form of nickel, ethylbenzene, ethylene oxide and benzene (a well known carcinogen). If you take all of this in consideration, drinking from the tap is the cheapest, safest and most environmentally friendly option; especially if you invest in a filtered water system.
If you buy one 16 oz bottle of water a day for a year at $1.50 each, you will have spent $547.50. The same amount of water from the tap would cost less than $2 for the entire year! Family of four? You are spending $2,180 too much on your drinking water! Many popular bottled water companies simply bottle processed tap water and sell it, essentially charging consumers for something they get for free. Someone has to pay for all that fancy plastic packaging.
In the U.S. more than 30 billion plastic water bottles are discarded each year, and they can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. Many plastic water bottles are recycled, but most are not, which makes the carbon footprint even bigger. There is no better way to reduce our carbon footprint now if we purchase a stainless steel water bottle.
U-Turn 2 Tap has a stylish assortment of stainless steel water bottles ($12.95 – $17.95) to choose from. I received the Hope, which features a beautiful olive green with white tree and leaves design. It is a much lighter green in person, and I love it! I take it everywhere I go. It suits my personal style. Best of all, it reduces my need for water bottles. It is constructed with a durable and sustainable 304 food grade stainless steel, which is very safe and toxin free. It also comes with two high quality lids: a stainless steel screw top and a BPA free sport cap. They even have a cute selection of stainless steel water bottles for children.
