One thing that I’m looking forward to doing for a family outing this season is watching Hotel Transylvania with my son, which will be releasing in the theaters on September 28th. I have always loved watching movies with Adam Sandler, even though he has had some movie flops here and there, but I was delighted to hear that he was lending his voice for this animated comedy, which also features the voices of Selena Gomez, David Spade, Molly Shannon, Cee Lo Green, and Steve Buscemi, to name a selective few out of a varied bunch.
In Hotel Transylvania, Dracula owns a lavish resort with legendary monsters of all walks of life in mind (Frankenstein and his bride, the Invisible Man, the Werewolf, and the Mummy). The monsters share similarities with humans when it comes to families and dealing with issues. One similarity that Dracula shares with some parents is that he is a helicopter parent, a colloquial term for an over protective parent. In one case scenario, he invites all of his monster friends to celebrate his beloved daughter, Mavis’ 118th birthday. Jonathan (Andy Samberg), an ordinary human, accidentally stumbles upon the resort, while backpacking his way across Europe. Dracula helps him blend in by disguising him as Johnnystein, Frankenstein’s supposed cousin. Everything shortly goes awry after that, because “Johnnystein” falls for Dracula’s daughter. Overall, it sounds like a good movie to watch with the family! It has a distinct Tim Burton meets Coraline vibe – charming, slightly dark, yet lovely at the same time.
